hearth & petals trust center

how every idea earns your trust

This is the working policy behind our home, garden, product, and seasonal content: who is responsible, how claims are checked, how tools and images are handled, and what happens when something needs correcting.

Published July 12, 2026 · Reviewed by Bob Thomas, founder and editor

the short version

six rules that do not move

Everything below explains these rules in more detail.

01

name the person responsible

Bob Thomas is the founder, editor, author identity, and corrections contact.

02

check specific claims

Manufacturer, official, university, and other primary sources come first.

03

never invent experience

Research, illustration, and firsthand testing are described as different things.

04

label commercial influence

Paid, gifted, and affiliate relationships are disclosed clearly.

05

make corrections possible

Every reader has a direct route to challenge a detail or source.

06

keep safety in scope

A design guide never replaces local codes, product directions, or a qualified professional.

01 · who

who is responsible

Hearth & Petals is owned and edited by Bob Thomas, an interior decorator and house painter with more than ten years of hands-on experience. Bob is the named author identity used across the site and the person accountable for the standards and corrections described here.

Bylines, published or updated dates, the About page, the author profile, and structured author data are intended to point to the same person, not a vague “editorial team” that readers cannot identify.

what this does not mean

A byline is not a claim that every pictured room is Bob’s project or that every product has been personally tested. The evidence behind a claim must still be described honestly.

02 · how

how research is handled

We begin with the decision a reader is trying to make, then look for the details that would change that decision: dimensions, materials, compatibility, maintenance, cost, timing, climate, availability, or safety.

  • Paint names, codes, finishes, and product specifications are checked against the maker’s own current information.
  • Plant, climate, and toxicity details favor university extension, government, botanical, or other authoritative sources.
  • Measurements and calculations are checked for units, realistic ranges, and the assumptions a reader needs to know.
  • When a precise fact cannot be supported confidently, the copy stays general or the claim is removed.
  • Tradeoffs and “skip this when” guidance are included when they materially change cost, upkeep, safety, or fit.

Sources may appear inline when they help the reader judge a claim. A source link supports the factual detail; it does not transfer responsibility for our interpretation.

03 · transparency

images, software & AI-assisted tools

Hearth & Petals may use software and AI-assisted tools to organize research, explore illustrative visual concepts, compare options, or generate shopping suggestions. These tools can help package an idea; they do not create firsthand experience and are not treated as an authority.

  • Illustrative concept images are inspiration, not documentary proof that a pictured room, garden, or build was completed exactly as shown.
  • Written measurements, materials, constraints, and manufacturer directions take priority over visual approximation.
  • Automatically generated shopping suggestions are labeled on the page and should be checked for current price, fit, stock, and specification before purchase.
  • We do not use “we tested,” “we used,” or equivalent firsthand language unless that experience actually happened.
  • Automation is not allowed to turn an unsupported claim, credential, result, or personal experience into fact.

the accountability stays human

Bob Thomas remains responsible for what is published under his name and for reviewing reported errors, regardless of which production tools helped organize or illustrate the page.

04 · independence

products, affiliates & sponsored work

Commercial relationships are allowed only when the reader can still understand what influenced the page and what did not. Editorial usefulness and honest scope come before a brand’s preferred wording.

  • Affiliate links may earn Hearth & Petals a commission without increasing the reader’s price.
  • Sponsored content is labeled clearly and agreed deliverables do not remove our editorial control.
  • A gifted product never guarantees coverage, a positive verdict, or inclusion in an unsponsored recommendation.
  • Paid do-follow links, undisclosed advertorials, and guaranteed-positive reviews are not accepted.
  • Product claims supplied by a brand must be supportable and may be narrowed or removed.

Brands can read the complete working expectations on the Partner With Us page. Readers can review the site-wide affiliate and content disclaimer.

05 · accountability

corrections & updates

If you find a measurement, plant note, product specification, source, safety statement, or broken link that appears wrong, use the contact page. Include the page URL, the exact detail, and any source or firsthand context that would help us check it.

  • Material factual issues are reviewed against the best available source.
  • Confirmed errors are corrected; the page’s modified date is updated when the content changes.
  • A correction note may be added when the change materially alters the advice or when context helps readers.
  • Opinion, taste, and lived experience may differ; disagreement is considered, but it is not automatically treated as a factual error.

the fastest useful report

Use the subject “Correction” and paste the URL, quoted sentence, and reason it may be wrong. Specific reports are much easier to verify than a general objection.

06 · limits

safety & professional limits

Hearth & Petals provides decorating inspiration and practical planning information. It is not a substitute for local building codes, permits, a product’s current instructions, or advice from a qualified contractor, electrician, plumber, engineer, arborist, veterinarian, medical professional, or other specialist.

  • Check structure, wiring, gas, plumbing, fire, fall, chemical, and tool risks before starting work.
  • Verify plant toxicity and suitability for the people, pets, climate, and conditions in your home.
  • Confirm dimensions, load ratings, compatibility, stock, warranties, and local rules at the point of purchase or installation.
  • Stop and get qualified help when the work is outside your experience or could cause injury, major damage, or a code violation.

trust works better when readers can answer back
